O'Rourke calls out Texas Gov. Abbott for executive orders following mass shootings: 'Not one' mentions guns | TheHill - The Hill

Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas) criticized Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) on Twitter for issuing a set of executive orders following two mass shootings in the state but not mentioning guns.

The 2020 presidential candidate retweeted Abbott’s post Thursday in which the governor announced eight executive orders “to address the tragedies in El Paso and Odessa.”

“Not one of these orders mentions guns…,” O’Rourke wrote in response.

The orders signed by Abbott largely focus on increasing reporting standards for law enforcement regarding suspicious persons and educating the public about how law enforcement uses Suspicious Activity Reports.

The orders include implementing state-wide intake questions to better identify information that should be reported to the Texas Suspicious Activity Reporting Network, as well as ordering the Department of Public Safety to create programs aimed at raising awareness of how such reports are used to flag potential mass shooters.

Of the eight orders, none explicitly mention guns or firearms of any kind.

A statement from Abbott accompanying the orders says he will “continue to work expeditiously with the legislature on laws to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous criminals, while safeguarding the 2nd Amendment rights of law-abiding Texans.”

Texas dealt with two mass shootings in the state in less than a month. Twenty-two people were killed last month at a Walmart shooting in El Paso and another seven people were killed in West Texas over the holiday weekend.

O'Rourke is one of the most outspoken advocates for gun reform following the two shootings, making the issue a staple of his presidential campaign.

He paused his campaign last month to spend extended time in El Paso following the shooting, later releasing a national plan that calls for a nationwide gun licensing system and registry, as well as a mandatory buyback program for already banned assault weapons.
