Trump defends nationalism, American sovereignty in rousing UN speech - New York Post

President Trump delivered a rousing defense of nationalism and American sovereignty to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday — while also trying to rally an international response to Iran’s aggression.

In a 37-minute address, Trump implored the world’s leaders to put their own nations first, stressing strong borders and bilateral trade deals to replace what he called flawed multinational trade agreements.

“If you want freedom, hold on to your sovereignty, and if you want peace, love your nation. The future does not belong to globalists. The future belongs to patriots. The future belongs to strong, independent nations,” Trump told the gathering of world leaders.

“Globalism exerted a religious pull over past leaders, causing them to ignore their own national interests. Those days are over.”

Focusing on his America First view, Trump said the nation’s security was jeopardized by Iran and warned Tehran to stop its aggression toward US allies in the Middle East.

“As long as Iran’s menacing behavior continues, sanctions will not be lifted. They will be tightened,” Trump warned.

Trump called the Islamic Republic “a malignant tumor that has to be eradicated.”

“One of the greatest threats facing peace-loving nations today is the repressive regime in Iran. The regime’s record of death and destruction is well-known to us all. Not only is Iran the world’s number one state sponsor of terrorism, but Iran’s leaders are fueling the tragic wars in Syria and Yemen,” he said.

But he also dangled the notion of a diplomatic breakthrough, saying “the United States has never believed in permanent enemies. We want partners, not adversaries.”

As for China, Trump launched a sharp assault on its economic policies, defending his attempts to negotiate a new trade deal amid tit-for-tat tariffs with Beijing.

“The American people are absolutely committed to restoring balance to our relationship with China. I will not accept a bad deal for the American people,” he said.

“The most important difference in America’s new approach on trade concerns a relationship with China. In 2001, China was admitted to the World Trade Organization. Our leaders then argued this decision would compel China to liberalize its economy and strengthen protections to provide things that were unacceptable to us,” Trump said.

But, he added, the deal was a disaster for the US.

“The United States lost 60,000 factories after China entered the WTO. This is happening to other countries all over the globe. The World Trade Organization needs drastic change. The second-largest economy in the world should not be permitted to declare itself a developing country to game the system at others’ expense.”

China has been a frequent target of Trump’s complaints, as his trade war has slowed both countries’ economies.

Trump also touted US sanctions, which have damaged Iran’s economy and sparked retaliatory actions from Tehran, including the attack on Saudi Arabia’s oil industry, according to the US.

The regime, he added, must change its behavior.

“For 40 years, the world has listened to Iran’s rulers, as they lash out for the problems they created. They conduct ritual chants, ‘Death to America,’ and monstrous anti-Semitism. It’s like a malignant tumor that has to be eradicated.”

Trump also railed against illegal immigration and vowed he would protect US borders.

“One of our most critical challenges is illegal immigration, which undermines prosperity. Mass illegal migration is unfair, unsafe and unsustainable for everyone involved,” he said.

“The receiving countries are burdened with more migrants than they can responsibly accept, and the migrants themselves are exploited, assaulted and abused, by vicious coyotes. Nearly one-third of women who make the journey north to our border are sexually assaulted along the way,” Trump declared.

He then slammed what he called a “cottage industry” of activists who he said were encouraging human trafficking and “erasure of national borders.”

“Today, I have a message for those open-border activists, who cloak themselves in the rhetoric of social justice. The policies are not just. Your policies are cruel and evil. You are empowering criminal organizations that prey on innocent men, women and children,” the president said.
